The Epic Race: Dahlins verses the Lennons

Star Date: August 11th 1969.

I got back from the "diarrhea-trip to Valhalla" (otherwise known as the 1969 Boy Scout Jamboree in Idaho) to find that things were awfully weird on Harding Ave.
Wait!
Wait!
Wait...that didn't come out right...everything was always kind of weird on my street, because we lived there of course.

"Weird" is not the right word, maybe I should have said "unusual." Not that things had gotten normal all of a sudden, but that there was this ominous vibe in the air. I think the adults could explain it better, but as a kid it's something that you could feel by the silence.

Mr. Lennon was very athletic and always had his kids running time-trials up and down Naples avenue with a stop watch in his hand. I don't know if the times he recorded should have counted because the 50 and 100 dash-marks he painted in the street next to their house ran down hill towards Saint Marks church. Anyway, I think Danny and Mimi were his two fastest runners. Mr. Lennon was always trying to get us to race his kids, but I saw Mimi run a couple of times and knew that she could beat the pants off of me by a mile. Danny was playing football at Loyola University up on the hill with the big letter L that you could see from our house. Mr. Lennon's big challenge was his oldest boy, Danny, race against my oldest brother, Tony...
.                  ...i.e. the Lennons verses the Dahlins.

It was the anticipated event of the summer!  But when I got back home to Venice from this Boy Scout trip with Troop 32, there was no visible activity going on anywhere on Harding avenue.

No diabolical plans of reeling in the old grouch next door (post 5/9/13).
No launching of flaming UFO's (post 8/24/13).
No bags of dooh-dooh on Edna's front porch.
 No hamper torture (post 6/5/13)
 No electrocutions (post 4/26/13 & 7/8/13).
No screeching down the streets in Hot Rods.
No Helm's Bakery Truck ambushes (post 8/3/13).

Tommy couldn't come out and play, the Blasers had to stay inside for some reason

Jeffry couldn't come out and play, Bob and Jeanette Lennon's family had to stay inside.

None of the Superior ave Lennons were around (and they were always around).

No touch football was taking place in the street. No kick-the-can and none of the Dahlins were shooting each other with B.B. guns nor we they hunting me with needle-tipped arrows.

I couldn't put my finger on it, but something wasn't right.

The hippies were in the back, quietly minding their own business, doing whatever it is they do in that back-ivy-cave with those "Mexican tomato plants" of theirs. I was beginning to get suspicious of those plants because they never seemed to grow any tomatoes  - even after all the attention my brothers gave them.

One of hippies was making his way from the ivy enclave (the dark ivy cave that the older boys called "Wall Drug") when the Veloci-Rooster attacked and scared the "long-hairs" spit-less who then screamed like a little girl and fell onto the thin, tin walls of the old, pool-turned reptile-habitat. Stretched out across the side of the fallen tin wall, the freaked-out screeches of the long-hair turned to a muffle as the dude landed face down into the billion gallons of sand that we had stolen from Venice Beach. When the cocky attack rooster caught a glimpse of what was slowly making a predatory approach in the direction of the downed hippie, it wisely backed up and gave way.

The insidious yellow eyes of the creature blinked slowly as if assessing what to do with its victim. Exposing its dagger-shaped teeth the Caiman alligator appeared to have weighed it options and decided for escape rather than attack.

Let me tell you, "That was one lucky hippie!"

The "gator" creature took off across the stoned victim and began running in a frenzied circle around the backyard looking for the easiest means of exit.

Chickens flew! Feathers were everywhere! Rabbits and chuckwallas and guinea pigs and even the desert tortoises took cover. Things flung, rusty bikes buckled into a heap and old BBQs standing on three legs fell over as stacks of decaying National Geographics swayed as if under the influence of the latest earthquake.

The chicken squawking, the awful screaming, the animal caterwaul, and the clamorous racket of the symphony of dissonance alerted all of us in the house that something terrible was "afoot" (Sherlock Holmes would say), in the backyard.  Tony and I looked out the window in time to see the gator making his way into the front yard.  The prehistoric reptile ran to the soft tar street and couldn't decide which way to turn. I hoped the Tripps wouldn't open their front door after what had happened to them last time (post 8/1/13 Iguana Del Diablo) and thought how nice it would be if Edna's brother, Hutch, was makings one of his notorious visits to Harding Ave instead and had a close encounter of the worst kind with the savage reptilian gargoyle.

(Ricky Tripp pictured to the left).

Without any fear at all, Tony took off his shoes and bolted after the flesh eating monster. The sharped-toothed beast raised it's body on all fours and took off towards the Lennon house. Forget Tony verses Danny Lennon, this was Tony verses the lightning fast cold-blooded carnivore that had escaped from the Dahlin swamp.

Billy Lennon decided he would break the top security curfew and had lurking outside in front where he watched the whole thing.

Down the street, came the gator ablaze with the inspiration of freedom, followed by the barefooted Dahlin whose feet were moving so fast that you couldn't even see them.

Taking a right at the corner of the Lennon's house Tony bolted after the high-strung vertebrate and made a record 50-yard-dash, grabbing the tail of the raptor so that it could not run into the wide open doors of Saint Mark's Church!

Tony flung the thing around a couple times to scatter its feeble brain, heaved it over his shoulder and returned the ravenous beast to it home.

Billy knew!  He saw the whole thing.

Billy knew that his oldest brother, Danny didn't stand a chance against my oldest brother! He sneaked back inside the safety of the compound and whispered accounts of the events of the epic race that took place right out in front of his house.

(I just put in the picture to the Right, for fun of course. The Lennon Sisters weren't really out in front during this latest episode...they were being diligently protected by the watchful eye of their Dad because of the rising intensity of the lunatic threats that the crazed fan, Chet Young, had made against Bill Lennon).

My birthday was in two days. I would finally become a teenager...13!  But in two days that didn't seem to matter anymore.. because everything was about to change the very next day on our beloved street!

Venice as I knew it, was about to change forever!

Oh and if any one sees Keith Bjelajac, thank him for letting me borrow his Saint Mark's sweater.

The Interrupted Funeral: Conclusion of the Whale's Tale!

What started out as a fisherman's dream to get out beyond the Marina Del Rey breakwater and into the open ocean to match wits and to do battle with a few feisty fish turned into a tragic tale of Epic proportions.

CLICK HERE TO HEAR RAUL SING!!!
(Link opens in a new window. Minimize and keep reading!)

While the hippies were having a solemn memorial vigil in the backyard, Mrs Blaser and Mrs. Nargie sat tearfully with Mrs. D as she had to make the most difficult phone call of her life. It was hard enough losing two of her own children, but now feeling somewhat responsible, she had to tell Mrs, Gherhing the news that her seventh-grade-boy had died recklessly at sea in one of the Dahlin boats.

No rattlesnakes had escaped, but one of the older boys raised the "Don't Tread On Me" flag at half mast in order for the neighborhood to mourn the loss of the three boys!

The one lone corbina Karl caught, turned out to "THE DEADLIEST CATCH"

While Raul and the Coast Guard Cutter were battling the ruff seas to pick up shards of debris from the small craft that was being battered against of the cement  pylons of the Venice pier...Karl, Patrick and I were battling Moby Dick! Alright, so it wasn't the notorious Moby Dick, but it was one angry whale that had one bad attitude.

Karl and I attempted to beat the whale off with the wooden oars (as though that helped make matters any better) as Patrick hid under the bow and...well...cried...and said Sr. Edith's prayer over and over again.  The relentless whale kept coming back..over and over again - ramming us from the side - coming up under the our rickety wooden boat and flung us into the air like a popsicle stick. We were so busy fighting the leviathan that we hadn't noticed that the giant sea creature had actually pushed us northward against the current just beyond the opening of the breakwater and left just as fast as he appeared.  The wind and the southward swell pushed us right into the mouth of the Marina. The same whale that almost killed us saved us from the sure death that of being pulverized into splinters against the breakwater rocks.   Triton or Aquaman or God or something was on our side.

A three hour tour...a three hour tour.

Karl tinkered with the sickly motor for another half hour until it sputtered and coughed and barely chugged us back to the launch ramp.

After backing the boat into its spot next to the two sailboats and the green MG that were crammed under the palm tree...Karl took the whale-slapping-paddle to defend himself against the 4-inch razor-sharp talons of the crazy attack rooster as he entered the backyard. When Karl got back to the Wall Drug - hippie haven "Hooch Hut"- he sensed the heavy hearts and quietly joined the long hairs who were sharing fond memories of a friend who had apparently died at sea. Taking turns they puffed the magic dragon that medicated them in this difficult time and in turn boasted of who saw "The Fisherman" last as though each word had sacred importance which gave them bragging rights. Karl sat in awe of this heroic and legendary person they grieved, taking a hit from the refer that was being passed around from lip to lip he also shared a few memories of his own of the unknown friend. Having no idea that Karl was in their midst, his long soliloquy was followed by awed and reverent responses.
                                         "Dude..."
                                                     "Dude...Dude"
                                                               "Dude...Dude...Bro!"
To which they all bowed their heads and became quiet... until Karl asked, "Dude...don't double Dude bro...like, who are we talking about?" And when they looked up and saw who it was - they jumped on him in jubilation and a brawl broke out (all except for the guy who peed his pants).

Meanwhile Patrick and I slipped  inside the house through the side door into the kitchen, and made some sourdough toast to warm our bodies. In the other room all the ladies from the neighborhood along with some of our neighborhood chums who were gathered in then living room, except for Mrs. Lennon. One of the Priest from Saint Marks was there to guide them through the process of grief as they also shared stories of three very special people who had died. Patrick and I quietly ate our warm sourdough and listened from the other room behind closed doors. We cried along with all those in the other room about these three, poor, lost souls who had lived lives of near sainthood. Then pride - than shame struck us as we realized that we had been eavesdropping on our funeral like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. .I have to admin it felt good to listen to all the lies everyone were saying about us...I wished it went on longer and I wished I had known me better!

Patrick belched and mom slid open the huge double doors into the dining room and everyone saw us sitting there in tears eating toast when someone exclaimed "It's a miracle."
"A resurrection!" shouted Father Shelton... as moms rushed to hug us, until Ulrich and his crew thought it was a terribly and cruel joke in manipulating everyone emotions and jumped on top us and beat the crude out of us.

We obviously deserved some "Keel Hauling" and gladly received our due penance - we were just thankful to be alive!

Later, Mrs. Lennon and the Lennon Sisters told me they would have been there for my impromptu funeral service, but they were busy filming their first Kellogg's Special K commercial.

Good for you Mrs. Lennon...Good for you!

And everyone lived happily after after...

Until Good Friday!

Tribute to my big brother, Karl Dahlin! 2.0

This is my Pictorial Tribute to my big brother, Karl H. Dahlin, who passed away last Monday morning, APRIL 7th at 9:25 am.   (I make sure to say that the time was specifically 9:25 am because those digits become very significant).

Karl was born on August 13th, 1948 at Saint Johns Hospital in Santa Monica, California (the second boy of the Dahlin tribe).

Mr. and Mrs. Dahlin, had one boy... then Karl...then another boy... then another boy... then another boy...

Karl (front bottom third from left)

A recent picture I took of Karl, this past July (at Donny Blaser's house) just before his 65th birthday.

My big brother was very special to me (of course, since I was his birthday present) Karl was extremely bright...and very talented.  He greeted me at my birth and I had the chance to be with him at his peaceful passing...interesting enough, on Monday morning at 9:25am.

He made custom built cabinets for the remodel at the kitchen for 925 Harding ave... As a craftsman he did work at Bob Dylan's house and I remember when he brought back a pair of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's shoes from the custom work he did there. He did work at Cheech Marin's house (of Cheech and Chongs).

Karl could do anything he set his mind to and taught me how to make 90 degree cuts without a T-Square - I still can't figure out how he did it.

Beside a rich fishing legacy...Karl leaves behind three children: David (Married to Malyn - two grandsons Westin and Waylin and one on the way), son Michael and Daughter Karlee...

...in addition to Janet... 5 or 6 brothers, two sisters...and a bazillion nieces and nephews.

Karl you are loved...I will miss you!

(your birthday present) Baby Brother... Mark
